Bayern Munich has officially terminated its “Visit Rwanda” sponsorship campaign with immediate effect, following mounting criticism and controversy over Rwanda’s human rights record.
The partnership, which aimed to promote tourism to the East African nation, will no longer feature in the club’s marketing and branding.
In a statement, Bayern confirmed that while the tourism promotion has ended, the club remains committed to supporting young football talent in Rwanda.
In collaboration with the Rwandan Ministry of Sports, the FC Bayern Academy in Kigali will continue to nurture and develop promising players, offering them opportunities for training, mentorship, and international exposure.
The decision comes amid growing scrutiny over similar partnerships between major football clubs and governments accused of rights violations. Bayern joins a list of clubs re-evaluating their sponsorship ethics, prioritizing social responsibility alongside sporting ambitions.
The FC Bayern Academy in Kigali, launched to empower Rwanda’s youth through football, is expected to remain a central pillar of the club’s engagement in the country.
