Germany reports to its citizens that they should not travel to Iran which is out of concern for arbitrary arrest, interrogation and long term prison sentences.
Also at play is the issue of Iranian revenge which has brought this issue to the fore it comes in the wake of Germany and some other European powers triggering the UN “snapback” which put back in place sanctions on Tehran for breaking off from the nuclear program agreements.
Berlin is calling for German citizens already in Iran to leave that country which it has warned will see a limited consular response in the case of detention. Also reported to have the political situation become more unstable after the sanctions were put in place which in turn puts German nationals at risk.
Germany, France, and the UK took the action which brought in the UN sanctions which Tehran has put up strong opposition to.
This brings Germany in to the practice which other Western countries have been to of tightening travel advice for Iran in recent weeks.
Germany’s Foreign Ministry issued the advisory due to risks of arbitrary arrest, interrogation, and long prison sentences for its nationals, amid fears of Iranian retaliation after European powers (including Germany) triggered UN ‘snapback’ sanctions over Iran’s nuclear program violations.
