Desparate Afghans are clawing rubbles in search of missing loved ones after strong earthquake killed over 812 people and injured more than 2,500 in Eastern Afghanistan.
The 6.0 magnitude Quake struck deeply at a depth of 8km (5miles) estimated to be more destractive and shook buildings from Kabul to Pakistan’s capital Islamabad.
Helicopters are now hovering around to provide rescue since the affected area is mountainous making rescuers to be hampered by loose landslides triggered by the earthquake.
The Taliban’s Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that a special committee has been formed by the Prime Minister’s Office to expedite their rescue and to provide basic aid to the victims .
“Measures have been taken to evacuate victims and deliver food and other essentials to those affected. There are also some allocations for the victims and more money will be made available if need be” . Mujahid Said.
An overnight earthquake struck Afghanistan’s eastern and central provinces on Monday, according to the Disaster Preparedness Authority.
Several villages were reportedly buried in Nurgul district, with fears that hundreds remain trapped under rubble.
Rescue operations are underway with teams from the ministries of Defense, Interior, and Health, along with provincial governors, disaster management departments, and the Afghan Red Crescent. Helicopters have been evacuating the injured to Nangarhar hospital, with more than 40 flights conducted so far.
