Ghana’s President Escapes Fatal Helicopter Crash That Killed Eight, Reports Say
John Dramani Mahama narrowly avoided being on a helicopter that crashed on Wednesday en route to Obuasi, where he was originally expected to attend the launch of an anti-illegal mining program, local media reported.
His photo even appeared on event flyers (photo 1). Instead, he sent the defense and environment ministers to represent him — both died in the crash, along with six other officials and crew members.
That same day, Mahama reportedly attended the First National Pastors and Spouses Prayer Retreat as a special guest of honor.
Following the tragedy, he declared three days of national mourning and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast.

Sources close to Ghana’s presidency say that among the deceased were:
• Defense Minister, Edward Omane Boamah
Environment Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, were among the five passengers on board the helicopter, as well as three crew members
