Mali’s former prime minister Choguel Kokalla Maïga has been placed in detention by the country’s Supreme Court on charges of embezzling several billion CFA francs in public funds, judicial authorities said Tuesday.
Maïga, who led the government between 2021 and 2024, was ordered jailed after spending a week in police custody.
The Supreme Court’s General Prosecutor said a judicial investigation had been opened into alleged irregularities involving budget management and contract awards during his tenure.
The probe targets the handling of funds within the Prime Minister’s Office as well as contracts linked to the Agency for the Execution of Rural Infrastructure and Equipment Works (AGETIER).
Charges brought against the former premier include forgery, embezzlement, misappropriation of public assets, money laundering, and complicity.
Maïga, a key figure in Mali’s transitional government after the 2021 coup, has not publicly responded to the allegations. No trial date has been set.
