A secondary school in Kakamega County is under sharp criticism following claims it attempted to cover up the defilement of a female student by suspending her under the guise of indiscipline.

St Ann’s Nzoia, Kakamega County has been on spot weeks now after a parent reported the incident.

The girl’s parents allege that after their daughter reported being sexually assaulted by a teacher named Nicholas Omondi, the school administration punished her instead of pursuing justice. They argue the suspension was meant to silence the victim and shield the accused staff member.

Community members have condemned the school’s actions, accusing officials of failing in their duty to protect learners. Education authorities have since been urged to intervene and ensure a transparent investigation into the matter.

Parents and child rights advocates warn that such incidents highlight systemic failures where institutions prioritize reputation over the safety of students.

They insist that those responsible for any cover-up, alongside the suspect, must be held accountable to safeguard trust in schools.

The case is now attracting wider attention, with growing calls for justice for the victim and stricter enforcement of child protection laws.

On my occasions, the Principal Mrs Violet Wepukhulu is alleged to coach children to stage demonstration to Local Police Station in claims of falsely accusing their head if the School.

Record TV Kenya has exclusively obtain receipt of the leave out sheet the student was given contrary to school’s report of suspension.

Her uncle, Alvin Ambabi narrated to Record News;

Deborah was defiled on 13th of july 2025 and she came home for school holidays on 29th of july, her performance was worrying and we tried to find out why, but everytime she mentioned about Nicolas Omondi she could break down in tears, Uncle narrates

… so I thought maybe omondi was beating her in school or maybe severe punishment. We reached out to her mother who was stays in Nivasha. The mother came on 30th august, we had a deep family discussion and Deborah opened up and told us that omondi defiled her in the staffroom on 13th of July.., he continues

She tried to reach out to the class teacher about the matter but the class teacher instead told her ‘ampe 450 aende amnununlie dawa’ and that was the reason Deborah never opened up again about that matter in school.

“We went to Kongoni TSC offices on 1st of September, reported the matter to Mr Njoroge (Kongoni tsc director) and later that day we also shared it with the principal Mrs Violet Wepukhulu and they both promised to act on the matter… On 5th of September Deborah was discharged from school to go seek further medication and that’s the day we reported the matter to the police”…, Uncle narrates

‘The police did their investigations and promised us that by 12th the culprit will be in custody for further interrogations…. Since then nothing has happened we haven’t received any news from anyone, We went back to school on 15th of September had a meeting with the director of education Kongoni, tsc director and other related people from kongoni offices and they all promised to act first and get to the root of this matter’ Mr Alvin says

‘Now a week later nothing has happened, the police are claiming they are waiting for the Principal to produce the culprit, the principal is claiming she is waiting for the police to arrest the culprit… It’s now a matter of cat and mouse game’ Deborah’s uncle ended in tears
