The latest results from Malawi’s 2025 presidential election shows former President Arthur Peter Mutharika is in a commanding lead with 66.7% of the 3.2M valid ballots counted so far, while the incumbent President, Lazarus Chakwera, trails significantly and would need an extraordinary turn of events to change the tide.
With 24 of 36 councils declared, Mutharika has received 2.1 million votes and requires only 200k from the remaining 12 councils to be declared the winner.
His path to victory is well within reach of achieving the constitutional 50%+1 threshold.
In contract, Chakwera faces an uphill battle. He would need to secure 1.6 million votes from the remaining 12 councils to meet the same threshold, an outcome that appears increasingly unlikely given the current margins.
Still, historical data shows that many of these areas tend to favor Mutharika, further complicating the incumbent’s prospects in closing the gap.
The election commission has 14 days to announce the results that were held on September 16th.
Malawi won’t be the state in Africa giving Presidents only one term as this norm is becoming in most countries.
